(Have to admit it’s pretty cool to see Nourishing Dance mentioned too 😊). This article asks the important question, “What would it look like for dancers to be truly well–and how can we get there?”

Are there some major cultural changes that need to happen in order to make a meaningful difference in improving the health and well-being of dancers?

Yes, yes, and yes.

Hello 2025! New year, new opportunities to better

Hello 2025! New year, new opportunities to better support the health & well-being of dancers! Here are 5 goals I’d love to see every dance school & company accomplish this year:

1️⃣Time to Fuel: Build enough time into dancers’ schedules to eat

2️⃣ No Diet Talk: Don’t comment on what, how, or how much dancers are eating

3️⃣No Negative Body Talk: Don’t comment on dancers’ body size, shape, or changes

4️⃣Education & Trainings: Provide ongoing education to dancers AND to teachers/staff on nutrition, body image, and eating disorder prevention

5️⃣Resources: Normalize getting professional help & provide dancers with an easy-to-access list of recommended specialists

Whether the holidays are a joyous time for you, a stressful and challenging time, or maybe a bit of all of these, I wanted to share some holiday swaps to help make this season healthier and happier (you weren’t expecting “Eat this, not that” recommendations from me, were you 😁?).

Did you steal that holiday dessert? No? Then let’s take the guilt and judgment out of holiday meals and celebratory food (ideally, all food would be enjoyed guilt- and judgment-free).

🍽️Because diet and dance culture assign morality to what and how we eat (“This is good, that’s bad. You’re being so good. I’m being so bad.”), it might help to remember that all food provides energy, carbs, protein, and/or fat. So, no matter what’s on your holiday plate, it provides nutrients to your body.

❤ ️Perhaps more importantly, getting in necessary nutrients is not the only reason we eat. Food is so much more than just fuel–it’s also pleasure, connection, love, culture, celebration, and more.

🎁Give yourself the gift of permission for the holidays and beyond. Permission to enjoy your favorite foods in peace. Permission to tune in to and honor what your mind and body are telling you you need, whether that’s rest, play, social interaction, alone time, or to set some boundaries.
