Grateful as always for opportunities like this to provide education to those who train and care for dancers to help create a more supportive dance environment 🩰🌎❤️🌱. And always a good day when I get to present with the brilliant and amazing @sashadmo. Looking forward to my workshops with the school dancers and @sfballet company dancers and faculty/staff on Tues.

This quote opens Ch. 3 in Nourishing Dance. It’s from a qualitative study of female collegiate athletes that asked about factors that helped or hindered their recovery from an eating disorder. I frequently hear the same thing from dancers I work with - it can feel impossible to heal their relationship with food and their body in an unhealthy and unsupportive environment.

Curious about what these athletes said helped their recovery? ⭐Two of the most important factors were unconditional support (including from coaches) and professional care ⭐

I’m a big believer that we have so much to learn from people’s lived experiences. Let’s take what they say to heart and stop promoting, ignoring, and accepting eating disorders, disordered eating, and under-fueling in the dance world. I first posted this 3 years ago, inspired by @simonebiles decision to prioritize her mental and physical health rather than competing regardless of the cost. Now as the 2024 Olympics have come to a close, she left us all with another gift - proof that focusing on your health and healing doesn’t mean your career is over. It doesn’t mean you are wasting time or your talents - it can actually mean the opposite. Re-prioritizing to make space to care for all the parts of you - beyond just the dancer/athlete part - can lead to a healthier, happier, stronger you. #HumanFirstDancerSecond

For all the change that is still desperately needed in sports and in the dance world, I’m choosing to focus on the places where we can find hope. Finding inspiration in the people that show us change is possible by Being the Change 🌟💖✨.
